"Clarity is the bridge between what you mean and what others hear. Influence is what remains once the conversation ends."

What you'll gain

After the Media Fluency Lab, you will be better able to:

Media Fluency is a learned skill, not a personality trait. We give you practical tools, coached experience and a framework for communicating in interviews, on stage, in high-stakes meetings and when the floor opens for questions.

1

Turn nerves into confidence

Use structured preparation to feel ready before the first question is asked.

2

Deliver clear, quotable messages

Turn complex thinking into clear, concise language people can remember and repeat.

3

Stay composed under pressure

Keep your composure and your message when the conversation takes an unexpected turn.

4

Handle tough questions

Answer difficult and unexpected questions, then return to your point without being evasive.

5

Adapt across formats

Communicate effectively in media interviews, on stage, in panels, high-stakes meetings and Q&As.

6

Strengthen reputation

Build trust in you and your organisation through what you say and how you say it.

Who should attend?

CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, CMOs, spokespeople, senior marketing and PR teams, founders, entrepreneurs, subject matter experts and professionals preparing for interviews, presentations, panels or high-stakes Q&As.

Not media skills. Media Fluency.

Skills enable execution.
Fluency guides impact.

Moving from media skills training to the Media Fluency Lab wasn’t just a rename. We had a laundry day. We tipped out everything we’d been teaching since 1998, looked at what still belonged, what needed updating and what we could leave behind. Then we built the Lab around practice, feedback and the chance to try again.

Media skills teach you how. Media Fluency adds the judgement: whether to speak, what to say and how it might land. Because what people hear, repeat and remember goes beyond the interview.

That matters because today's media environment asks more of a spokesperson than the ability to perform well in an interview. You need to understand the moment, the audience and the context, shape a message that can travel beyond the original interview, and understand the responsibility that comes with being heard.

Media Skills

= How

The tools, techniques, content and operational know-how. We've delivered Media Skills Training since 1998 and much of what we taught remains relevant.

vs
Media Fluency

= Why

The strategy, narrative, context, interpretation and meaning. Skills without fluency can be impressive but reckless. Fluency without skills can be thoughtful but ineffective. Together, they create credible, strategic communication.

The five pillars

From why you're speaking to what your communication leaves behind.

The Media Fluency Lab is built around five connected pillars. They take you on a journey from deciding whether and why to speak, through shaping your message and delivering it under pressure, to building trust through clarity that connects and influence that lasts.

Pillar 1

Intention

Preparation and media mindset. Know why you're doing the interview, who you're really speaking to and what needs to land.

Enter knowing your success
Pillar 2

Clarity

Crafting the message and storybank. Turn complex thinking into clear, concise messages people can understand, remember and repeat.

Say what matters, quotably
Pillar 3

Presence

Delivery, voice and presence. Use voice, pace, body language and composure so the audience stays with you and trusts what they're hearing.

Confident on camera and mic
Pillar 4

Control

Interview dynamics and tough questions. Learn how to bridge, reframe and stay on message while remaining calm and credible.

Keep your message in the room
Pillar 5

Trust

Building long-term credibility. Understand how honesty, consistency, usefulness and context build credibility over time.

Strengthen trust every time

"Media fluency training isn't just about surviving interviews; it's about mastering the moments that shape perception and reputation."

About join.the.dots

A South African reputation and communication house.
Working globally.

Founded in 1998 by Ingrid Lotze and Gavin Moffat, join.the.dots helps businesses and leaders communicate with clarity, lead with trust and connect with intention. Our work spans reputation management, strategic communication, content and training. We advise clients on the communication challenges they face and prepare them for the conversations that follow.

We’ve worked with executives, spokespeople and subject matter experts in multinational corporations, growing businesses and public-interest organisations. Since 2022, we’ve also lived and worked nomadically across different cultures. That experience keeps us questioning our assumptions about audiences and context: what feels clear or familiar to one person can mean something quite different to another.

The Media Fluency Lab forms part of our broader Communication Fluency methodology: helping people understand not only how to communicate, but how audience, context, intention and behaviour shape what is ultimately heard, understood and remembered.

The trainers

Two voices. Three decades each.
One classroom.

Their work is also shaped by an unusual classroom: since 2022 they have lived and worked nomadically across 34 cities in 13 countries, continuing to work with clients while learning first-hand how context, culture and human connection change the way communication lands.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers, honest detail.

What is media fluency and why does it matter?

Media fluency is the learned ability to communicate with clarity, confidence and credibility under pressure — in interviews, on stage, in high-stakes meetings and when the floor opens for questions. It is a trainable skill, not a personality trait.

Leaders are judged not just on what they know, but on how clearly and confidently they communicate — in media interviews, panel discussions, podcasts, webinars and stakeholder engagements. These moments can be unscripted, high-stakes and unforgiving. Media fluency equips you to turn them into opportunities to build trust, establish credibility and shape the story.

What makes the join.the.dots Media Fluency Lab different?

Three things set us apart: experience, methodology, and structure.

We have been coaching leaders and spokespeople since 1998, drawing on deep experience in media, reputation management, and communication strategy. Our facilitators, Ingrid Lotze and Gavin Moffat, stay abreast of technology developments and bring a combined 60 years of practical experience - not theory generated by AI or slide decks.

Our methodology follows a Record → Review → Refine loop. Participants do not just learn - they practise under real conditions, watch themselves back, receive individual coaching, and do it again. This builds both skill and muscle memory quickly.

Our programme is structured around five pillars – Intention, Clarity, Presence, Control and Trust - covering the full media engagement cycle, not just interview technique.

How practical is it? Will participants get on-camera and on-mic practice?

Yes. Every participant takes part in realistic simulated TV, radio, podcast, and online interviews. Sessions are filmed and recorded in a professional studio setup. Using our Record → Review → Refine approach, participants watch their own interviews, receive direct one-to-one coaching from an experienced facilitator, then repeat the exercise with the feedback applied. You leave with skills you can use immediately.

Who should attend?

The Media Fluency Lab is designed for:

  • Executives and spokespeople - senior leaders and designated spokespeople who represent their organisation in the media and at stakeholder engagements.
  • Founders and entrepreneurs - business builders who need to build profile, attract investment, and communicate with authority.
  • Marketing and PR professionals - teams who shape, protect, and amplify their organisation’s story across media channels.
  • Subject matter experts - technical or specialist experts who need to make complex information clear, compelling, and accessible.
  • Ambitious professionals - anyone who recognises that communication is a career-defining skill and wants to invest in it.
How many people can attend?

We keep groups small - maximum five participants - to ensure every person receives focused, individual coaching and enough time in the hot seat.

Can the programme be customised for our industry or organisation?

Absolutely. We tailor interview simulations, message frameworks, case studies, and scenarios to match your sector, your spokespeople’s specific challenges, and the media landscape you operate in.

Afternoon session - Delivery Skills & Presence, Interview Dynamics & Techniques, and Building Long-term Credibility: on-camera and on-mic performance, handling tough questions, bridging and reframing, and protecting credibility under scrutiny.

Throughout both sessions, participants cycle through the Record → Review → Refine loop, building real skill through coached repetition.

Absolutely. We tailor interview simulations, message frameworks, case studies, and scenarios to match your sector, your spokespeople’s specific challenges, and the media landscape you operate in.

Do you offer one-to-one coaching for individuals who want deeper support?

Yes. We offer optional one-to-one coaching packages to build on the programme and embed media fluency as a long-term skill. These are priced separately.

Be ready when the questions get difficult.

Media Fluency isn't about having a perfect answer to every question. It's about knowing why you're there, what needs to land and how to stay clear, credible and in control when the interview goes somewhere you didn't expect.
